John turns his life around with Better Off Finance

There’s nothing worse than feeling out of control. When life begins to take a downward turn, the resulting domino effect can cause breakdowns of relationships, businesses, and ultimately, mental health.

62-year-old John’s* life began to spiral after his business began to fail. At the same time, his marriage started to disintegrate; due to the stress and anxiety he was under, he eventually became alcohol dependent, disengaged from his family, and withdrew from society, rarely leaving the house and neglecting to care for himself. As matters worsened and his mental health deteriorated, John began to suffer from suicidal thoughts.

Alcoholism and mental health issues often go hand in hand - people with mental health issues are twice as likely to develop alcohol dependency than the rest of the population. While many use it to numb negative feelings, in the long run alcohol greatly contributes to stress, anxiety and depression, meaning sufferers become trapped in an inescapable cycle of trying to treat a problem with the very thing that is causing it.

John was put in touch with the Better Off Finance programme by his housing association, who were assisting him in finding a cooker and using food banks. His situation had deteriorated to the point where he realised he needed help: he lived alone in a four bedroomed house, and found himself unable to deal with everyday matters. John came to the decision himself that he wanted to turn his life around and become alcohol-free, and so reached out for support.

Through Better Off Finance, John was assigned a Key Worker, who provided 1-2-1 support throughout his journey. During this period, John managed to clear his water arrears and create a new payment plan for future bills; he received a new washing machine, as his previous one had fallen into a state of disrepair; he reduced his mobile and TV package, and received support in creating a manageable budget for utility bills and monthly outgoings – something which he has never done before. A further grant has also been applied for to top up John’s current income while he is getting back on his feet.

As a result of the support from Better Off Finance and his Key Worker, things have been looking up for John. After getting his new washing machine through Better Off Finance and a new cooker from his housing association, he has started taking care of his appearance and eating healthily, which has had a huge positive impact on his wellbeing. In turn, this has led to him reaching out to his family and spending time with his grandchildren – along with support from a substance misuse charity, contact with his family has been a massive encouragement in his journey to becoming sober.
The change in John is clear: he’s more confident and sure of himself, and is managing independently. He’s recently gained a qualification in First Aid, something which he could never have imagined doing a few months ago.

He said: ‘The support and encouragement from my Key Worker has been amazing, and I can’t thank he enough for just listening and understanding my situation. I would urge anyone to access this service. It has been invaluable to me in realising that there is help if you want it, and it has started to build my confidence and self-respect back to what it used to be’.

Sitting down with Sarah, she looked at the simple changes that can be made like looking at gas/electric comparisons, looking at contents insurance to make sure household personal possessions are fully covered for repairing or replacing and we looked at opening a credit union account.

Sarah is now in control of her debt: “I am more positive, happy and confident knowing my finances are under control and being managed better with the amount I can afford to pay”

Alongside receiving financial advice she has been able to meet new people and also get some great tips on how to save for the future. “I think people should really think about coming onto the programme, I like how talking about finances isn’t made scary or serious and the group can have a good laugh whilst doing it”

Danielle Can See a Clear Future Thanks to Better Off Finance

Worrying about debts piling up and having just had her benefits sanctioned, Danielle was told about the Better Off Finance Programme in Halton Citizens Advice and decided it was time she took control of her finances and gave it a go.

Recently, we spoke about how debt can have detrimental effect on a person’s mental health and how it can make a person’s behaviour to change dramatically during the period of poor health. Feeling vulnerable due to mental health, Danielle felt she was unable to engage with the working programmes she had been sent on by the Job Centre leaving her to live on just £277 per month and was struggling to make ends meet.

Being able to sit down one to one and engage with a Better Off Finance key worker meant that Danielle was able to figure out ways to increase her income and take the appropriate actions that saw her sanctions removed which has left her with a much better outlook on life:

“My mental health and relationship with my 12-year-old son has improved since going through the programme due to having more money coming into the family”

Completing the programme full of confidence, she now engages with work programmes to help her into employment and recently completed an employability course with Riverside.

“I really liked the one to one support and being able to have direct contact with my key worker, Gill. It’s really helped my confidence and I was so glad to get help with my sanction”

Struggling with poor mental health for many years, Danielle found it hard to manage her finances and is now able to breathe easier with an increased income and has more knowledge about her universal credit claims online.

“I have so much more confidence than before! I would definitely recommend it as I can now see a future for me and my son. I really want to get into work, and now I can start to think about it as I’m starting to manage my debts.”

Thanks to Danielle for sharing her story, we're excited about what your future holds.

Marie Boosts Her Self-Esteem Leaving Her Financially Better Off

The Better off Finance Programme came into Marie’s life, just when she needed it- not only improving her budget but, heightening her confidence to match.

Struggling with the prospect of several years out of work, Marie's self esteem was interfering with getting back into employment. After previously leaving education with less qualifications than hoped, the only barrier stopping her from retaking these subjects- was herself.

Taking the first positive step, she enrolled on the Better Off Finance Programme after advice to attend from the Citizens Advice. Being able to access this kind of support, she began to enjoy the prospect of starting more courses and reaped the benefits out of each session. Marie completed My Turn And WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Planning) courses, beaming with knowledge and future prospects.

It was fear and confidence that she soon realised was holding her back from taking the necessary first steps towards moving into employment. The prospect of new people and new surroundings would overwhelm Marie, preventing the ambition to feel comfortable in new employment. However, attending programmes was the spring board to meet like minded individuals, potentially struggling with the same fears and troubles.

These programmes became a confidence enhancer, making find her voice and her feet in group settings and new people. In her own words being a woman who didn’t know how to discuss her opinions, embarked in new conversations feeling content and safe to do so.

'Managing me' run by the Next Chapter course, opened Marie’s awareness into herself, and the platform to then set goals and strategies to help manage anxiety. Taking volunteering on twice a week at a food bank and charity shop, she gained tremendous confidence in feeling safe around others, and her skill set continued to grow.

Taking the small successful steps to slowly gain the confidence and esteem to now be enrolled in study and gain the qualifications that Maria aspires to have. In the mean time accessing support to write a CV and confidently looking for employment.

"Having someone supporting and encouraging me left me feeling like I was able to do things for myself."

Better Off Finance Inspires Catharine to Pursue Business Dream

Feeling overwhelmed with the complexity of the benefits system, Catharine used to avoid looking into her finances alone. Now, with support from Better Off Finance Catharine has become financially savvy and confident to start her own business. It seems that for Catharine, the only way is up!

Having left her teaching job due to illness in 2011, Catharine was unemployed for 7 years and receiving job seekers allowance, feeling unable to progress with her business dream. Joining the Better Off Finance programme gave Catharine the time, space and advice to assess her monthly outgoings and work out where she could become more money-smart.

Better Off Finance programme supports people to improve their financial capability and prepare and progress into sustainable employment, or access training opportunities. Feeling anxious whenever she tried to look in to her finances alone, Better Off Finance ensured Catharine was utilising the support she was eligible for.

With her key worker’s support, Catharine managed to save £100 a month; “I really feel like he has given me tools for life to maximise my income and minimise my outgoings, I always tended to bury my head when it came to this stuff – now I have the confidence to find and negotiate better deals for monthly necessities”.

Regaining control of her personal finances, Catharine felt empowered to begin thinking about employment opportunities and the next step forward. Often the scariest thing about pursing a business-dream is the reality of becoming a business-owner. Catharine knew her passion but didn’t believe she had the enterprise skills or experience to turn that passion into a business – and that’s where Enterprise Hub came in.

Head over to The Women's Organisation blog to hear more of Catharine's story.

Journey Through The My Turn Programme

Since the launch of our My Turn Programme in April 2018, our trainers have been travelling around the Liverpool City Region helping people just like you Think, Believe & Achieve! We were lucky enough to hear from our trainer Victoria Hart who gave us a taster of what My Turn covers.

Let’s hand over to Victoria as she takes us through the MyTurn journey during her Wirral Citizens Advice sessions…

Starting off the "Think, Believe & Achieve" session with 10 participants, we start with an icebreaker session, which is always a brilliant way to allow a group to get to know each other and meet the people they are going to be spending the programme with. We found out about hobbies and achievements which produced some brilliant discussions, including finding out one member of the group had abseiled down Devils Gorge in Mold, and another had met Amanda Holden! It was a fantastic way for everyone to introduce themselves.

We moved on to an important discussion of confidence and what the group thought confidence was. From this discussion, some great suggestions were put forward

“Being comfortable with yourself” and “being able to say no”

From the points raised, the group then identified situations where they would need to feel confident. Throughout the morning, we focused on the practical strategies for improving confidence on a day to day basis, from visualisation to power stances.

Before breaking for lunch, we also delved into barriers that the group through they needed to overcome and were able to help each other thing about the ways in which they could overcome them. The group found hearing other people’s stories useful, as it made them realise that others are going through the same thing, something that made them feel less isolated.

We recommenced with assertiveness. In a group, we identified the differences between aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive and assertive behaviour. Using celebrities, the group identified that assertive behaviour can sometimes be seem as a negative thing and that there are many derogatory words related to being assertive. We discussed how assertiveness can be used in different situations and how confidence has a link to assertiveness.

The group reflected on what they found the most useful during the session

“Understanding how confidence and the relation to wellbeing”

“Meeting new people and learning new things about other people’s issues”

“It’s good information with useful practical advice”

Thanks Victoria! Sounds like some great things were covered, and big congratulations to our My Turn participants!

New dates available below!

Lets talk about the link between Debt and Mental Health

Opening up about personal finances can be a sore subject, especially when facing money issues or finding yourself spiralling into debt. 6 million Britons believe that they will never be debt free, with the average person in the UK owing up to a whopping £8,000!

Ok, debt is a financial issue. But it can often lead to someone losing their home, relationship, family, and can pote ntially affect absolutely anyone. Whether you're employed or claiming benefits, falling behind on bills or being unable to pay back loans can bring you down. And whilst your income may just cover those ‘essential things’ in life, money doesn’t always stretch as far as covering built up debt from payday loans or credit cards.

Whilst worrying about the lack of money has effects on your social life and your ability to splash out on the finer things, it can also cause a fundamental change in your mental health, knocking your confidence and leaving you with the inability to think about your future or set goals and aspirations. One in two adults with debts has mental health problems, leaving people with long term effects such as depression and anxiety.

Research has shown that consumers with mental health problems believe their behaviour changes dramatically during periods of poor mental health. 93% say they spend more when unwell, 71% have put off dealing with creditors and 59% have taken out a loan they wouldn’t have taken out otherwise. The link between mental health and debt isn't something we can ignore.

The Better Off Finance program is here to help. We want to change the taboo of talking about money, support people in making their money go further and be a guiding hand to those who are ready to face their issues head on. So if you or anyone you know is out of work (don't have to be claiming benefits) and needs support, then get in touch and see if we can help.
